Special areas of operation are geographic areas having unique characteristics that require the use of special equipment, procedures, and/or techniques to safely conduct flight operations. These special areas also include operational situations when the application of standard criteria is not sufficient and other than standard criteria are more appropriate and can be safely used. This chapter provides direction and guidance for the evaluation and approval or denial of an operator’s request to conduct operations in these special areas of operation.
